First doctorate degrees for South African nurses was created by Joan
1966: Prof Charlotte Searle is the first South African nurse to receive a doctorate - in sociology (University of Pretoria).

18 September 1976: Prof JM Mellish receives the first doctorate in nursing (University of Pretoria).

1984: Prof Philda Nzimande is the first black South African nurse to receive a doctorate in nursing (University of South Africa).
